Taking the step to book a first psychiatric evaluation can feel daunting — especially if you're not sure what to expect. The good news: it's simply a conversation, and you're in the driver's seat the whole way through.
Before your appointment
It can help to jot down what's been going on, when it started, and what you're hoping to get out of care. A list of any current medications and relevant medical history is useful, too.
During the evaluation
Your provider will take time to understand your story — your symptoms, history, lifestyle, and goals. There are no wrong answers, and nothing you share is judged. The aim is an accurate picture so your care fits you.
- A relaxed, confidential conversation — not a test.
- Questions about your history, symptoms, and goals.
- Plenty of room for your own questions.
- A collaborative plan for next steps.
After your visit
You'll leave with a clear sense of the plan, whether that includes medication, coordination with therapy, lifestyle support, or follow-up. Care is reviewed regularly and adjusted as your needs evolve.
